Introduction
Octyl salicylate is an organic compound used as an additive in cosmetic industry particularly in sunscreens to absorb ultraviolet rays from the sun. It is an ester formed by the condensation of a salicylic acid with 2-ethylhexanol. It is a colourless oil soluble liquid with a slight floral odour.
Characteristics
Octyl salicylate is bright, clear, colourless liquid used to enhance the Ultraviolet-B protection in a sunscreen. It has a good safety profile covering wavelength between 280 – 320 nm, peak at 307-310 nm. The salicylate portion of the molecule absorbs ultraviolet light to protect skin from the harmful effects of exposure to sunlight, while the ethylhexanol portion which is a fatty alcohol functions as an emollient and adds oil-like (water-resistant) properties.
