Introduction
Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) is a surfactant that is available as a viscous off-white to pale yellow solution and widely used in the personal-care and cosmetic industry. It is a concoction of closely linked organic compounds and is derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine. As the name suggest, the lauric acid category which is a sizable component of the molecule is derived from coconut oil. Depending on its application, CAPB to a large extent has replaced cocamide DEA.
CAPB is manufactured by reaction of 3-dimethylaminopropylamine and the fatty acids obtained from coconut oil that results in the formation of an amide. Since CAPB is obtained from natural sources, this product is generally foreseen as safe and skin and environment friendly surfactant. Due to this property, Cocamidopropyl Betaine is widely used in distinct natural origin cosmetic formulations.
Applications
Unisurf betaine CAB is widely used in home care and personal care formulations
It is a medium strength surfactant used in bath products such as shampoos and hand soap
It is often used in cleansers because of its thickening and foaming properties, which help moisturize the skin
It is also used in household cleaning products, including laundry detergents, hand dishwashing liquids and hard surface cleaners
It also serves as an antistatic agent in hair conditioners
CAB along with sodium lauryl sulphate reduces its irritation potential and also exhibits synergistic performance in foaming
CHARACTERISTICS
- It is an amphoteric surfactant and zwitter ionic in nature
- Because of its foaming and moisturizing capabilities, it is compatible with other types of surfactants (Anionic, cationic and non-ionic)
- It performs as a foaming agent, viscosity increasing agent, emulsifying agent, antistatic agent and hair conditioner agent
- It emulsifies and thickens certain cosmetic formulations, reducing the potential irritation caused by other cleansing ingredients contained in the product
- It produces a fatty layer on the hair that gets rid of static and provides softness and manageability
Handling and Storage
- Keep container tightly closed, stored in a cool place and dry place at temperature 20°C - 35°C
- Keep away from direct heat and sunlight
- In case of spillage, clean the area by flushing with excess water
- Avoid contact with eyes and skin
